Well-made furniture can last multiple lifetimes—but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t
need care along the way. This vintage sofa, for instance, was in desperate need
of a refresher. But fortunately for Alli Gannet, she was able to snag it for
free, thanks to Facebook Marketplace. “The couch must’ve been…

When you don’t have a ton of outdoor space, you need to make what you have work. For Jennifer Grammer of @jennifer_grammer_designs, the issue wasn’t necessarily that she had a small backyard—but since most of it is wooded, only a small space remained to create a hangout zone. And, she says, “right outside the back door you found this wasteland. It stayed a red mud pit the majority of the time and with dogs and a young son not a great combination.

Old houses come with a lot of charm—and a lot of head-scratching spaces, too. At Briana Jones’s (@brianarosejones) 1922 bungalow, there was a space at the top of the stairs that she really didn’t know what to do with. It wasn’t big enough to turn into a room, but it was bigger than a hallway—it was an awkward amount of space that was tough to fill.

When it comes to living spaces, it’s not enough to be functional—it’s important
to be comfortable, too. The same goes for outdoor spaces, as Asa Davis

For many people, patios are an extension of their homes—an outdoor room where
they can spend time with family or unwind at the end of the day. But sometimes,

easy project, there’s one part of the process that can have even experienced
DIYers second-guessing themselves: choosing the paint!

Sometimes it takes a couple phases of renovations to create a space you really love. That was the case for Gisele Blaker and her kitchen. When she and her family moved in, the teeny tiny kitchen was filled with both upper and lower cabinets in a creamy white, distressed finish. While the base cabinets had pretty simple panels on the doors, the top ones were a little more detailed, with cathedral insets that didn’t mesh with Gisele’s preferred style.

At the start of 2020, I had what I thought amounted to a pretty good work-from-home setup: a small desk with a couple of shelves, plus an accent chair that was padded enough to serve me on the occasional days when I felt too under-the-weather to make it into the office, or wanted to wrap up any stories in my off hours. Then, of course, occasional work-from-home days became work-from-home weeks became work-from-home months.

I spent most of my adult years living in a small New York City apartment, so
moving out of state a couple years ago and into a house that has an actual yard
has been an exciting new adventure for me. While some parts of having a yard are
equal parts exhausting and soul crushing (ahem, raking leaves)…
